AWC Double Header Day- June 25th!

UPDATE (6.21.11):  The Double Header is just around the corner!  If you registered on the website, I’ll be sending out details tomorrow about when and where we’ll be meeting.  We have a big group going already (yea!) so I’m going to cut-off registration at the website.  We could use some more advanced boaters who’ll paddle both the Upper Ocoee and the Hiawassee…so if you fit in that category- email me (river0013@gmail.com) to let me know that you want to join us.

If you’re a beginner and missed out on this trip, we’ll likely do another Hiawassee trip in July and August.

Chad

We started this trip several years ago to create an event where our beginner and intermediate boaters could spend a day meeting and paddling with our advanced and expert boaters.  It's hard to get a advanced boater to give up an Ocoee day, so we said "Let's do both"!  It's a long day, but we always have a lot of fun!

Upper Ocoee
(Class III-IV) AW Disciptions
We start the day with a trip down the Upper Ocoee for advanced boaters.  This is a trip to allow our advanced boaters to get their adrenaline kick in for the day. It's relatively fast-paced so that we make it the the takeout in time for lunch.  Because we'll be moving quickly its generally not recommended as a first-timer trip.

The last couple years we've also had a raft trip on the Upper Ocoee for beginner and intermediate paddlers.  Everyone had a great time so we decided to have it again this year.  Mark Niesler will be guiding the raft.  Note that we'll have very limited raft capacity-so the first to sign up get first priority! **THE RAFT IS FULL ALREADY**

Picnic Lunch
After the Upper Ocoee paddle the advanced boaters and rafters meet up with the rest of the Hiawassee paddlers for a picnic lunch at the Upper Ocoee takeout. We ask everyone to contribute a little bit to the picnic.  We'll have all the fixin's for sandwiches, we're looking for chips, fruit and veggies, or desserts from you.

Hiawassee (Class I-II+) AW Discription
After the picnic lunch we'll caravan over to the Hiawassee River for a fun, relaxed trip down the river.  This is a very beginner-friendly river and there will be plenty of advanced boaters their to help the beginners and intermediates out.  If you have friends that don't own a boat they can rent a sit-on-top from Hiawassee Outfitters and join us.

Camping
Camping is purely optional, though very recommended.  After two rivers, a beer at the campground and sleeping in your tent will be much better than the drive back to Atlanta.  Plus, it sets you up for another trip down the Ocoee or Hiawassee,  hiking in the Big Frog or Cohutta Wilderness, or mountain biking at the Olympic Center on Sunday.  We'll camp at Adventures Unlimited (AU) near the Ocoee.

Questions?  Email Chad at river0013@gmail.com.
Full details will be emailed to everyone who signs up several days before the trips.
