The AWC will hold a American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue: Level 4 class on Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16, 2010.  There will also be a mandatory classroom session on Wednesday evening, May 12, 2010.  The instructors will be Bruce Williams, Brent Coleman and Jay Manalo.

The ACA Swiftwater Rescue curriculum includes boat-based rescue, although it focuses primarily on shore-based and in-the-river rescue techniques.  A course outline for "Swiftwater Rescue: Level 4" is available on the American Canoe Association website at Swiftwater Rescue: Level 4

Participants should have class II paddling skills and will need to bring a boat to the Sunday river session.  They should be good swimmers as we will spend a lot of time in the water and will swim rapids.  Dry suits or wet suits are highly recommended.

The cost is $125 for AWC members or $150 for non members .  The non-member cost includes AWC individual membership.

Registrations are limited and will be accepted in the order that  payment is received.  The registration deadline is April 12, which is also the cancellation deadline.  Fees are not refundable after that date.  If there is a waiting list, those on the list will be notified of any openings at that time.  Pre-course information will be e-mailed to participants on May 1.

This course has been registered with the American Canoe Association and is covered by ACA liability insurance.  ACA membership is required.  ACA members should  bring their cards to the evening class session.  If you are not an ACA member, you must pay a $5 ACA event membership fee.  Please bring a $5 check payable to "American Canoe Association" to the class session.

We encourage you to join the ACA if you are not already a member.  To join, call (540)907-4460, ext 103.  To join online, go to: ACA Join Online.  Individual dues are $40.  Family dues are $60.  It takes several weeks for the ACA to process membership applications.  If you apply on line, you will receive a confirmation number at the end of the process.  Print a copy of the confirmation notice and bring it with you on May 12 if you have not received your card by then.  You can also join  ACA  with payment by check at the classroom session.

The classroom session will be held on Wednesday, May 12 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm at the REI Atlanta store on the I-85 access road south of Clairmont Rd.  The river sessions will be on Saturday & Sunday, May  15-16 8:30 am - 4:30 pm on Amicalola Creek at Ga. 53.  You should not make  early evening plans on Saturday or Sunday.

If you have any questions, call Bruce Williams at 404-231-0042.
