Winter Paddling Presentation by NOC's Wayne Dickert+Chili Cook-off + AWC Officer Nominations

General Meeting Information & Directions

Are you ready to paddle through the winter?  Hopefully we'll have a winter of heavy rains and the creeks will be running on a regular basis.  If you're prepared for the conditions, it can be the best time of year to be a paddler.  If you're not prepared, it can be miserable.  Our goal with this meeting is to get you prepared- and what better way to do it than have a presentation on how to safe and warm in the winter and have a chili cook-off!

As usual, we start gathering for Social (Half) Hour at 7pm and the meeting will start around 7:30pm.  We encourage members to attend and as always, guest are welcome!!!

Winter Paddling Presentation by NOC's Wayne Dickert

Wayner's resume includes Olympic Paddler, the head of NOC's instruction programs, several whitewater instruction books and videos, and all-around good guy.  He's done several winter paddling presentations for us in the past.  Each year we learn some more tips and tricks and get to see some of the new gear that is available to keep us warm.

Chili Cook-off
After you've paddled your favorite creek in the winters fwe things are as good as a frosty beverage and some warm chili at the takeout!!  We invite you to bring a crock-pot of your best chili or stew to the meeting.  We'll taste the chili and stew at the beginning of the meeting and announce the winners after Wayner's presentation.

We'll have two categories:
  • Red Chili
  • Green Chili Stew and Brunswick Stews
AWC Officer Nominations
We'll take nominations for AWC officers at the November club meeting.  Voting will be online for several weeks in late November and we'll announce the new officers at the December club meeting.  We are expanding the Executive Board from 4 to 7 members, so there are more opportunities to help the club now.  Note that any member is welcome to run for any position, just have someone nominate you or just nominate yourself!

Here's the positions we'll be electing this year:
  • President (Monthly meetings, board meetings, big picture stuff)
  • Vice President (Events)
  • Treasurer (Finances)
  • Secretary (Communications)
  • Stewardship (Conservation, Cleanups)
  • Membership (New member welcome, renewals)
  • Paddler Development (Roll practice, SWR clinic, beginner trips)
Note that the descriptions are general and the roles vary year-by-year based on interests and skills of those on the board.  Many functions are done as a group or with a team of board members.  Also, remember that you can (and should) recruit your friends to help you.  AWC Board meetings are once a month on Tuesday nights.  Board members should be able to attend the monthly meetings.  If you'd like to help the club out let one of the current officers know about it.
